Meet Rufus: WagAware’s Second July 4th Rescue Pup!

Following July 4th, shelters were overwhelmed and we knew we had to help. Thanks to all those who bought WagAware charms, WagAware was able to donate $2,500 to the Bill Foundation, and Annie Hart went to Baldwin Park Shelter (one of the LA shelters with the greatest need right now) in her trademark overalls with her lucky leash to save two very lucky, deserving dogs. One, we introduced you to yesterday, is Ariel, the 5 lb wiggle-butt who made it out just in time. It was Ariel’s “final day” but because of our amazing supporters, we saved Ariel and her new best friend…Rufus, a perfectly healthy, two year old, pure breed Shih Tzu with the most charming personality. He looked terrible, but all he needed was a bath and haircut!

Screen Shot 2013-07-08 at 10.55.22 AMA lot of people don’t realize how many HEALTHY, loving and pure breed dogs you can find at the shelter, many who just need a good bath and a second chance. The Humane Society of the United States estimates that nearly 1/4 of all shelter dogs are pure breed, so there really is no good reason not to rescue. Rufus is a great example. He is so playful and loving, as soon as Annie opened his cage to freedom he turned over on his back and let her pet him like crazy.
Rufus loves to turn over onto people’s shoes and ask for belly rubs. As far as we can see, he’s an expert at it. He is a professional lover and when Ariel was a bit nervous in the car ride home, Rufus jumped next to her, licked her, and calmed her right down, as if to say, “Don’t worry girl, we are moving on to better times!”
Rufus is going to make someone a very lucky dog owner and we cannot wait to share all the wonderful surprises he has in store. We are documenting his journey from shelter to safety to forever home to show just how wonderful rescues are, and that it is often only a quick trip to the “spa” for a doggie bath and haircut that these dogs need to sparkle. This is going to be a really fun and Paw-sitive video about the amazing family dogs you can find at the shelter. Thank you WagAware supporters, you made this paw-sible and because of you Ariel and Rufus are going to live the lives they deserve! Rufus, Ariel, the Bill Foundation and I cannot thank you enough. Stay tuned for Rufus’ video debut!
